Key Learning Moment with Matthew McCarthy, Business Executive

  • Meet Matthew McCarthy

    With over 30 years in the corporate world, Matthew McCarthy has built a career transforming business. From starting in a family business to leading $1 billion-plus global companies, Matthew has been at the forefront of reinventing business to drive results through purpose. Most recently he was the CEO of Ben & Jerry’s, leading the company to its greatest period of financial growth and social mission impact. Last year he also wrapped up a 26-year run at Unilever where he led some of the most iconic and pioneering brands in the consumer packaged goods industry. Matthew’s impact and leadership has received broad recognition including Cannes Gold Lion, Fast Company’s Most Creative People In Business, Adweek’s Brand Genius award, and Columbia Business School’s Botwinick Prize in Business Ethics. Matthew is an independent board director for Charlotte’s Web Holdings and holds several corporate advisory roles. Matthew’s body of work speaks to his human-centered leadership approach. He is a mentor and coach, and also considers himself a lifelong student, especially in matters of gender and racial equity, reparative justice and environmental regeneration. Matthew’s wife Lisa is the Director of the Zoological Health Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, Bronx Zoo. They make their home in New York’s Hudson Valley.

They are a valuable tool in fostering inclusivity, creating cultural awareness, and encouraging leadership. The Triangle DEI Alliance's Annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) Conference encompasses many fields of expertise, communities of learning, and levels of understanding.  In addition to having a wide range of content that the business community can engage with - there are a variety of ways DEI concepts can be applied in different industries.  This year - the Triangle DEI Alliance is including industry-focused Action Sessions in the conference to give attendees an opportunity to learn how to apply their knowledge within their industry.  The goal of each Action Session is to allow every attendee to take the knowledge from their breakouts and the key learning moment and create practical DEI-focused industry take-aways.
